Yes, Scootboots have excellent drainage. Their design, which features open side vents, an open back and an open toe, enables water or mud to drain away easily and quickly.

Scootboots are extremely durable. Scootboots last an average of 1,000 kilometres (600 miles). 

The durability of Scootboots will depend on the type of terrain you ride on and the gait of your horse. 

If your horse has a floating movement and you only ride occasionally, then Scootboots will last several years. If your horse scuffs and twists its feet, then Scootboots will wear slightly faster.

Scootboots are excellent on all types of terrain including mud, sand, water, rocks, desert and snow.

Due to their design, Scootboots have excellent ventilation and drainage. Any debris that enters the boot, such as sand or pebbles, will filter straight back out.

Scootboots are very lightweight. A single Scootboot weighs approximately 250 grams (9 ounces) depending on its size.

Your horse’s behaviour will be able to help you determine if it requires further support and protection. If your horse is unwilling to step over stony, sharp surfaces and is footsore after a ride, it will most likely require some extra protection.

The Scootboot Mud Strap is the ultimate riding accessory for those who like it extreme. It is a long, double-sided strap that is fitted between the rear vertical shank of the boot under the trail gaiter, and over either side of the pastern. It is secured by the Mud Strap Collar and the Scootboot Front Straps Standard. 

The Scootboot Mud Strap is made from an extremely robust TPU which stretches when placed under pressure, and if secured correctly, won’t affect the horse’s pastern. 

The Scootboot Mud Strap has two purposes:

1. Provides ultimate security when riding in extreme conditions
2. Can be used to assist hard-to-fit hooves. For example, if your horse is in between sizes, the Scootboot Mud Strap can be fitted to a larger sized Scootboot and provide security. However you must have the correctly sized Scootboot Mud Strap. To put on a Scootboot Mud Strap:

1. Pass both sides of the strap through each side of the rear vertical shank of the Scootboot, under the trail gaiter.  Make sure the raised ends of the Scootboot Mud Straps are facing towards the front of the Scootboot
2. Thread one end of the Scootboot Mud Strap through the Mud Strap Collar
3. Slip your horse’s hoof into the Scootboot and place it on the ground
4. Bring each end of the Scootboot Mud Strap around the front of the Scootboot, with the strap going on either side of the pastern
5. Slip the second end of the Scootboot Mud Strap through the Mud Strap Collar, then push the Mud Strap Collar upwards to the top coronet
6. Slide each end of the Scootboot Mud Strap, one at a time, onto the bottom Scootboot Front Strap
7. Secure both Scootboot Front Straps

Check the fit of the Scootboot Mud Strap by sliding your finger between the Scootboot Mud Strap and your horse’s pastern. If it is feeling too tight, you may need a larger size.

Both the Scootboot Pastern Strap and the Scootboot Mud Strap are a source of securement for Scootboots. 

The Scootboot Pastern Strap is a long strap secured on each side of the Scootboot and placed over the pastern. It is designed to help prevent the Scootboot from being pulled off due to an overreach or being sucked off when riding through mud. However, it is not intended to be the primary source of securement. 2. Apply a small amount of lubricant (such as cooking oil) to the end of the Scootboot Mud Strap
3. Feed the Scootboot Mud Strap through the Scootboot Mud Strap Sleeve tubing
4. Secure the Scootboot Mud Strap to the Scootboot

The Scootboot Pastern Strap is a long strap secured on each side of the Scootboot and placed over the pastern. It is designed to help prevent the Scootboot from being pulled off due to an overreach or being sucked off when riding through mud. However it is not intended to be the primary source of securement. 

The Scootboot Pastern Strap is made of very strong thermoplastic urethane and is designed to stretch when placed under pressure. The strap will not affect the horse’s pasterns if secured correctly. It also has several holes to provide the correct setting, depending on the thickness of the horse’s pasterns. To set the strap at the correct length, make sure your horse is standing upright with its legs at 90 degrees. Once secured, you should be able to place one finger under the strap at the front of the pastern. 

Each pair of Scootboots comes assembled with Scootboot Pastern Straps and 2 extra Scootboot Pastern Straps.

Scootboot Front Straps are two small straps that close the front of the Scootboot. Scootboot Front Straps are designed to make the application and removal of your Scootboots simple and practical. 

Scootboot Front Straps are made of thermoplastic urethane which has excellent strength and flexibility, and can be easily stretched across the front of the Scootboot.

To change the Scootboot Front Straps:

1. Pull the Scootboot Front Straps sideways towards the secured position. Stretch the strap and maintain the tension and pull it back over itself until the straps release from the rivets
2. With a pair of wire cutters, cut the head of the rivet off the front of the Scootboot
3. Fit the Scootboots with four new knob hooks from the Scootboot Knob Hook Pack and secure them with a small amount of low strength Loctite Glue.

Secure the new Scootboot Front Straps on the new hardware on the Scootboot

Scootboot Front Straps can easily be attached/unattached using a hoof pick or a pair of pliers.

Scootboot Trail Gaiters are easy to fit neoprene gaiters that are secured to the back of the Scootboot with velcro. 

The Scootboot Trail Gaiter protects the top of the horse’s heel bulb to prevent rubbing on horses with sensitive skin, or for horses travelling long distances. We recommend using Scootboot Trail Gaiters when your horse is initially getting used to Scootboots. 

Please ensure the gaiters are attached in the correct position to avoid debris collecting between the bulbs and the Scootboot Trail Gaiter.

All new Scootboots come with a pair of Scootboot Trail Gaiters.

1. Open up the Scootboot Trail Gaiters 
2. Fold the Scootboot Trail Gaiter over the heel bulb straps of the Scootboot
3. Velcro both ends of the Scootboot Trail Gaiter together under the heel bulb straps
4. Ensure that the Scootboot Trail Gaiter logo is facing the back on the outside of the Scootboot

Scootboot Endurance Gaiters are neoprene gaiters that are fitted under the hoof and reach up the rear coronet area and around the pastern. 

The Scootboot Endurance Gaiter provides protection for the lower back of the pastern and the rear coronet area to prevent rubbing for sensitive skinned horses and for endurance horses travelling long distances.

To put on Scootboot Endurance Gaiters:

1. Insert the Scootboot Endurance Gaiter pad into the Scootboot
2. Fold the neoprene material back over the Scootboot and hold in place with your thumb
3. Place the Scootboot onto your horse’s hoof by slipping the toe of the hoof into the toe of the Scootboot and then give the sole of the Scootboot a tap so the back straps slip over the heel bulbs. Hold the gaiter while you do this to make sure it doesn’t slip to one side
4. Check the pad is sitting in the centre of the Scootboot. It shouldn’t be too far forward or bent up behind the back strap
5. Make sure the Scootboot Endurance Gaiter is covering all parts of the heel bulb, the neoprene material should sit smoothly without creases
6. Secure the velcro firmly around the pastern
7. Check there is no gap between the Scootboot Endurance Gaiter and the pastern to reduce the chance of debris falling inside the back of the Scootboot Endurance Gaiter

Horses will usually require Gaiters if they have sensitive skin or are travelling long distances. There are two types of Scootboot gaiters, Scootboot Trail Gaiters and Scootboot Endurance Gaiters. 

The Scootboot Trail Gaiter protects the top of the horse’s heel bulb to prevent rubbing on sensitive skinned horses, or for horses travelling long distances. We recommend using Scootboot Trail Gaiters when your horse is initially getting used to Scootboots. 

The Scootboot Endurance Gaiter protects the lower back of the pastern and the rear coronet area to prevent rubbing for sensitive skinned horses and for endurance horses travelling long distances.

Scootboot EVA Tape is a soft and protective adhesive tape that can be used as an economical, homemade gaiter to protect your horse’s heel bulb and prevent rubbing. 

It can be used in conjunction with, or instead of Scootboot Trail Gaiters.

To apply Scootboot EVA Tape to Scootboots, you need a roll of 40mm (1.5 inches) wide Scootboot EVA Tape, and a roll of duct tape:

1. Cut a 100mm (4”) piece of Scootboot EVA Tape 
2. Cut a piece of duct tape of the same length and cover the foam part of your Scootboot EVA Tape. This protects the Scootboot EVA Tape and decreases the chance of rubbing
3. Peel off the back of the Scootboot EVA Tape 
4. Place the tape on the back of the Scootboots heel strap and fold it back firmly on itself

The Scootboot Anti Slip Shim is a non-slip Scootboot accessory that can be inserted into the front of the Scootboot between the hoof and the Scootboot. 

Scootboot Anti Slip Shims can be used as a filler to provide a firmer fit when the hoof is in between Scootboot sizes or the hoof has shrunk due to dry conditions. It can also provide extra security when the hoof gets wet and becomes slippery.

Scootboot Pads are made of thermoplastic urethane that fit in the sole of Scootboots.

Scootboot Pads provide relief to horses with sensitive soles and give a firmer fit when the hoof is in between Scootboot sizes.  

We only recommend using Scootboot Pads if necessary. Most horses do not require pads in Scootboots. Using Scootboot Pads may affect the fit of your Scootboots and you may need to go up a size to accommodate pads. Yes, Scootboot Pads can be used in Scootboot Classic Slims. 

As Scootboot Classic Regulars are the same length as Scootboot Classic Slims, the width of the Scootboot Pads need to be cut down to fit in the sole of the Scootboot Classic Slims. You can use scissors, a knife or a cutting blade.

Scootboot Ice Studs are small metal studs inserted into the bottom of Scootboots to enhance your horse’s traction on slippery surfaces, such as ice. 

If you insert Scootboot Ice Studs into the bottom of your Scootboots, you will not be able to return your Scootboots for a refund or exchange.

To insert Scootboot Ice Studs into the bottom of Scootboots:

1. Select the required position to insert the Scootboot Ice Studs. You need an equal amount of Scootboot Ice Studs on each side of the Scootboot and in the same position
2. Drill a starting hole with a handheld battery drill with a 3/16” drill bit, 5mm (1/4”) deep into the Scootboot. Do not drill completely through the sole of the Scootboot
3. Insert the Ice Stud tool from the Scootboot Ice Studs Pack into the drill and slowly screw the Scootboot Ice Studs into the prepared holes made in the sole of the Scootboot
4. Ensure the head of the Ice Stud is sitting snug against the sole of the Scootboot

Remove Scootboot Ice Studs from your Scootboots when they are not needed. To remove the Scootboot Ice Studs, set the drill to reverse and slowly remove the studs. You can still use your Scootboots without the studs and the removed Scootboot Ice Studs can be used again.

If you insert Scootboot Ice Studs into the bottom of your Scootboots, you will not be able to return your Scootboots for a refund or exchange.

Scootboot Skins are the ultimate glue-on boot for the performance horse. They are constructed of a very strong  thermoplastic urethane, making them extremely robust and lightweight (220g/8 ounces) They allow your horse to ride over the toughest of terrains while remaining comfortable. 

Scootboot Skins are designed to protect horses competing in endurance. They are durable and flexible. They will give your horse unparalleled traction when riding in slippery conditions, so your horse can compete to the best of its abilities. 

Scootboot Skins can be left on for a 5-6 week trimming cycle due to the sole flushing design. They can also be used as a rehab boot for all types of injuries, inflammation, diseases and infections. They will keep your horse’s hoof dry and comfortable and promote healing.

We recommend that gluing be undertaken by people who are skilled and experienced in gluing hoof boots.

To prepare Scootboot Skins for gluing:

1. Put on protective eye equipment and latex gloves 
2. Attach a wire brush to a cordless drill and rough up the inside of the Scootboot Skins until all factory polish has been removed
3. Clean the inside of the Scootboot Skins with a rag and methylated spirits  
4. Cut a piece of cloth tape and stick it across the slots on both sides and the opening at the front on the outside of the Scootboot Skin 

To glue Scootboot Skins:

1. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to dry the hoof
2. Use the back of a rasp to rasp off any oil or dirt off the hoof wall 
3. Use a sanding block to sand off any remaining dirt or oil 
4. Clean off any loose particles from the hoof with a rag and methylated spirits 
5. Once the methylated spirits has dried, the hoof is ready for gluing 
6. Place a piece of masking tape over the vents on the outside of the Scootboot Skins. This allows the glue to penetrate the area and form a plug
7. Check the fit of the prepared Scootboot Skins on the hoof. It should be snug at the front of the Scootboot Skins with the toe forward. On the side of the hoof, the Scootboot Skins should sit below the hairline. On the back of the hoof there should be no excessive overhang of the heel bulbs 
8. Mark the centre of the hoof with a pencil so the Scootboot Skins will be straight and centred when you glue them on
9. Fit the Adapter into the bottom of the Shufit Glue and put it in the glue applicator
10. Remove the lid off the glue and attach the Mixing Tip
11. Test the glue before putting it in the Scootboot Skins, it should turn a light grey colour
12. Generously apply the glue to each side, inside of the Scootboot Skins
13. Place the hoof on a hoof stand 
14. Open the Scootboot Skins
15. Lift the hoof and place one side of the Scootboot Skins onto the hoof, and then place the other side onto it
16. Place the hoof back on the hoof stand and smooth out the glue 
17. Wrap the hoof in plastic wrap and hold the hoof above the ground for 2-3 minutes

To remove Scootboot Skins:

1. Separate the Scootboot Skins from the hoof wall by placing a flat-head screwdriver in between the Scootboot Skin and the hoof wall starting at the back of the Scootboot Skin and gently working around the Scootboot Skin 
2. Pick the hoof up and pull the Scootboot Skin off
3. Clean any debris out from the bottom of the hoof with a hoof pick
4. Place the hoof on a hoof stand
5. Use a rasp and sanding block to remove any excess glue off the hoof wall

The hoof is now ready to be trimmed.

Scootboot Skins can be left on for a 5-6 week trimming cycle without a build-up of bacteria under the hoof.

Due to their design, Scootboot Skins are self-cleaning and the entire sole of the hoof can be flushed out and medicated. This special feature saves the effort and expense of having to remove the Scootboots to apply medicated hoof packing.

Our Scootboot range is the recommended form of hoof protection for the majority of riding disciplines. Scootboot Skins are a glue-on boot specifically designed for endurance. 

Scootboot Classic Regulars are a healthier, natural, barefoot alternative to metal shoes. Their purpose is to help protect sensitive horse’s hooves to allow them to ride over any type of terrain, no matter how harsh, with comfort and support. 

Scootboot Skins are the ultimate glue-on boot for the performance horse. They are specifically designed for endurance riders who ride 80 kilometres - 160 kilometres (50 miles - 100 miles) and want additional security. The shelf-life of Shufit Glue is approximately 12 months if stored correctly. It is recommended that Shufit Glue is stored at a moderate temperature when not being used.

One 150ml (5 ounces) tube of Shufit Glue will glue 1 pair of Scootboot Skins.

The Scootboot Knob Hooks pack comes with 20 Knob Hooks. 

A Knob Hook is a piece of hardware that attaches the right side of the Scootboot Front Straps and the Scootboot Pastern Strap to the Scootboot. It is secured with a screw on the inside of the Scootboot. They are used to keep the Scootboot Front Straps and Scootboot Pastern Strap in place while riding. They allow the straps to be removed easily for a colour change.

A lot of concussion is applied to your Scootboots when riding which can work the screws loose. 

Scootboot is phasing out Loctite applied to all screws during production. Prior to using your new Scootboots you will need to ensure the screws are tight and apply either Loctite 222 or nail polish. If you do not apply either of these products you will need to check your Scootboots regularly as the screws may work loose due to concussion when riding. Loctite 222 can be purchased from hardware stores.

The Scootboot Riding Tights are black and yellow women’s riding tight. They are made from 83% polyester and 17% spandex with a silicone seat grip to ensure you stay in place while riding.

Scootboots and Scootboot accessories are made of thermoplastic urethane. Although this is a robust material, it can stiffen up when left in colder temperatures. 

We recommend storing your Scootboots and accessories inside during cold weather. This will keep the straps flexible and stretchy.

Scootboots are expertly designed to have excellent ventilation and breathability to prevent overheating.

Ensure that you have the correct size Scootboot Pads for your Scootboots. Having the exact size greatly reduces the movement of the Scootboot Pad in the Scootboot. If you want to apply glue to the Scootboot Pad we only recommend rubber shoe glue. We recommend you dot glue around the Scootboot Pad and not smear it across the entire surface, as this makes it too hard to remove.

The Scootboot Adjust is a superior hoof boot designed for long distance riding and to support barefoot mules. It has fully adjustable straps around the heel bulbs and accommodates various hoof types, especially high heels.

The durability of Scootboots will depend on the type of terrain you ride on and the gait of your horse. If your horse has a floating movement and you only ride occasionally, then Scootboot Adjusts will last several years. If your horse scuffs and twists its feet, then Scootboot Adjusts will wear slightly faster.

The majority of riders only use Scootboots on the horses’ front hooves. 

This is because the front end of the horse bears 60-70% of a horse’s body-weight during motion. The rear legs mainly propel the horse forward and experience significantly less direct weight-bearing. 

If you are riding endurance, riding over extreme surfaces or your horse’s hooves have not yet fully transitioned, you may require Scootboots on all four hooves.

A horse’s rear hooves are often narrower in shape compared to the front hooves, so they usually require a Scootboot Classic Slim size. Our Scootboot Classic Slims function exactly like our Scootboot Classic Regulars except they are more suited to narrower back hooves and slightly contracted hooves. 

The majority of horses only require Scootboots on their front hooves unless their hooves are being transitioned to barefoot, naturally sensitive or travelling long distances or over extreme terrain.

To fit your new Scootboots, you need to:

1. Ensure the Scootboot Front Straps are undone and the Scootboot Pastern Strap is detached from one side on the rear of the Scootboot
2. Pick up the hoof with the sole facing upwards in the trimming position and slip the toe of the hoof into the Scootboot, the hoof should slip comfortably into the Scootboot
3. Pull the rear of the Scootboot over the heel bulbs and place the hoof onto the ground
4. The fit should be snug but not tight 
5. Check the fit of the rear heel bulb strap at the back of the Scootboot by fitting a finger between the strap and the heel bulbs. If you cannot do this, your Scootboots are too small. The strap should not be placing any pressure on the heel bulbs
6. Secure the Scootboot Front Straps on the Scootboots by holding the end of the strap and stretching it over the knob hook at an angle and slip the elongated hole over the top or bottom edge of the knob hook. If you have difficulty securing these straps, use a hoof pick or needle-nose pliers
7. Once your straps have been secured they should show an even amount of tension 
8. When the horse is standing upright with its leg at 90 degrees, secure the Scootboot Pastern Strap around the horse’s pastern. Ensure that the strap is loose enough to be able to place two fingers between the strap and the front of the pastern
9. The strap must be set correctly to function properly - not too loose or too tight. If you cannot place two fingers between the Scootboot Pastern Strap and the pastern, loosen the Scootboot Pastern Strap another hole. If the Scootboot Pastern Strap is too tight the strap will pull the rear of the boot backwards and forwards over the rear of the hoof as the horse’s pastern flexes forward, and cause rubbing. This will not occur if the Scootboot Pastern Strap is set at the correct length
10. Pick up the hoof and gently twist both ways. The Scootboot should not turn on the hoof. If the Scootboot feels loose they may be too big

To check the fit of your new Scootboots, you need to:

1. Check the gap at the front of the Scootboot. Place your horse’s hoof on the ground and secure the Scootboot Front Straps. There should be a gap at the front, the size will depend on the shape of the hoof walls
2. Check the wiggle of your Scootboots. Lift your horse’s leg with one hand and grab your Scootboot firmly with the other and wiggle gently from left to right. If the fit is correct, the Scootboot will not rotate or move. If there is any rotation, your Scootboots are too big 
3. Check the bulb strap at the rear of your Scootboots. Place your horse’s hoof on the ground and try slipping one finger between the heel bulb and bulb strap of your Scootboot. If the fit is correct, you should be able to do this forcibly. If you are unable to place your finger between the strap, your Scootboots are too small
4. Check the space around the periphery of your Scootboot. Place your horse’s hoof on the ground and observe the space around the periphery of your Scootboots. If the fit is correct, the upper wall of the Scootboot should be snug against the upper wall of the hoof

No. If your horse’s hooves are a suitable shape for Scootboots and the Scootboots are the right size and correctly secured, they should not rotate on the hoof. If your Scootboot is rotating or moving on the hoof, you may have a size too big or your horse may require a correct barefoot trim. 

You can check if your Scootboots move or rotate on the hoof by using the ‘wiggle test’. Lift your horse’s leg with one hand and grab the Scootboot firmly with the other and wiggle gently from left to right. If the Scootboot moves or rotates, they are too big.

If your Scootboots twist on your horse’s hoof, your Scootboots are either too big or your horse’s hoof shape is unsuitable for Scootboots. 

If the twisting is minimal, we recommend you use Scootboot Anti Slip Shims to secure the fit of your Scootboots. Scootboot Anti Slip Shims are also a great aid when a horse is in between sizes or when conditions are dry and your horse’s hooves have shrunk.

There are three reasons why your Scootboots may be too loose: 

1. The size is too big. A smaller size Scootboot should fix this issue. Alternatively, you could snug up the fit of your Scootboots with Scootboot Anti Slip Shims
2. Your horse was sized in wet weather conditions which can swell the horse’s hooves from absorption of moisture. In dry weather hooves dry out and shrink, and grow slowly. To fix this issue you can snug up the fit of your Scootboots with Scootboot Anti Slip Shims
3. Your Scootboots may have stretched. Scootboots are just like a new pair of leather riding boots that stretch as they are broken in. Ensure that new Scootboots are fitted on the snug side to prevent this from occurring

There are three reasons why your Scootboots may be forced open more than what is recommended: 

1. Your horse may need a correct barefoot trim. The toes may be too long, the hoof may be too wide for the boot, or the horse may be at the end of its trimming cycle
2. If the gap is more than 15mm (5/8”) wide after the break-in period, your Scootboots may be a size too small. Please go to our Fitting Page to check the fit of your Scootboots and contact our Sizing Team at sizing@scootboots.com for help 
3. The walls of your horse’s hooves are too vertical and therefore not suitable for Scootboots. Horses with contracted feet usually have vertical hoof walls, as do mules, which prevents them from getting a secure fit in Scootboot Classic Regulars. Scootboot Adjusts may be more suitable in these cases

No, the correct sized Scootboot should not rub at all. If your Scootboots are rubbing you may have the wrong size, the Scootboot Pastern Strap may not be correctly secured or you may require more protective Gaiters.

Yes, we recommend you slowly break your horse into new Scootboots. Horses have different levels of sensitivity and Scootboots may rub if you don’t break them in slowly. 

Do a short ride the first time you use Scootboots. No more than 6 kilometres (4 miles). After your first ride the Scootboots will mould to the shape of your horse’s hoof. Do this until you are sure that your Scootboots are not chafing or rubbing. If there are no issues, gradually increase your riding distance. This will condition and toughen your horse’s skin.

Every new pair of Scootboots comes with a complimentary pair of Scootboot Trail Gaiters. We recommend using these gaiters when conditioning your horse's skin with new Scootboots. 

If your horse has extra sensitive skin or you are using Scootboots for long-distance and endurance riding, you may require a pair of Scootboot Endurance Gaiters.

Yes, you can use wrapping tape on your Scootboots. 

Scootboots are constructed of thermoplastic urethane (TPU). TPU is a very robust material with high abrasion and shock absorbing qualities, however it is affected by certain chemicals. You must keep your Scootboots away from any likely contaminants which will compromise the integrity of your Scootboots. 

Please note, we have identified that the widely used equine product ‘VetWrap’ will cause a reaction with the TPU in your Scootboots. As a result, ‘VetWrap’ should not be secured to your Scootboots. Your warranty will be voided if any damage occurs through the use of this. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.

Scootboots require a recent and correct barefoot trim to ensure a secure fit.

A natural, barefoot trim requires:

• Low heels. A barefoot horse does not require excessive heel length
• All flare removed from the hoof walls. A straight edge should be able to be placed from the coronet to the bottom edge of the hoof wall at ground level. There should be no space visible under the straight edge
• The ‘ground-bearing’ surface of the outer hoof wall bevelled. This prevents the hoof wall from chipping away. It also prevents the white line stretching and ensures a neat, strong hoof. The toe is short and rolled at a 45-degree angle to create a good break-over

You should trim your horse’s hooves every five to six weeks. When correctly sized, Scootboots will fit for an entire five to six week trim cycle. Do not go up a size to allow for growth between trims.

A horse’s hoof growth slows dramatically through the colder and drier months. In summer and winter, you can have increased riding time between trims unless you have a wet summer. Go to our Blog Page for more information about the changes in your horse’s hooves throughout the seasons.

If your horse is sensitive after having a barefoot trim, your barefoot trimmer or farrier may have rasped off the toe callus. 

The toe callus is the area of the sole between the tip of the frog and end of the toe. This area should never be rasped on a barefoot horse. If the toe callus is rasped your horse will become foot-sore.

Shod horses require higher heels because when a metal shoe is placed onto a hoof, the toe of the hoof is immediately lengthened. This results in a slower break-over speed, which in turn increases lever forces on the tendons at the back of the horse’s front legs. To keep a shod horse sound and prevent tendon injuries, keeping a higher heel height temporarily neutralises the lever forces to the tendons.

Barefoot horses require a rolled short-toe so with correct trimming, there are very few lever forces present. As a result the heels can be kept low and maximum contact between the frog and ground can occur. This is not only beneficial to the hoof but the horse’s entire body.

Welcome to your barefoot journey! 

Firstly, it is important to realise that there is a big difference between how your horse’s hooves are shaped now, and how they must be shaped to wear hoof boots. The shape of a shod hoof is different from a barefoot hoof that has had regular barefoot trims. A shod hoof has a lot more toe, heel and wall than a naturally trimmed hoof.

Once you have removed your horse’s shoes, you need to contact a knowledgeable barefoot farrier or trimmer and begin having regular barefoot trims every five-six weeks. Once the excess toe, heel and wall have been removed, you can start using hoof boots to provide extra protection and comfort to your horse.

No adjustment is required on the Scootboots as the boots are secured by the parts of the hoof that do not grow. If the correct sized Scootboot is used, the security will come from the upper part of the Scootboot and not the Scootboot Pastern Straps. This means Scootboots can fit throughout a five to six-week trimming cycle.

Yes. You can heat stretch Scootboots to get a custom fit. 

With some hooves, Scootboots can fit perfectly around the periphery of the hoof. If the heel bulb straps are too tight however, too much pressure can be placed on the bulbs. Heat stretching with boiling hot water can fix this issue. To heat stretch your Scootboots you need to:

1. Measure up your horse to determine how much to stretch your Scootboots 
2. Place the heel bulb strap into boiling hot water for approximately 1 minute until the strap is soft enough to stretch
3. Take the strap out of the water and stretch each side of the strap 
4. Hold the straps in the stretched position until your Scootboot cools
5. Dip your Scootboot into cold water to ensure it is no longer hot 
6. When the Scootboot is cold, try it on the horse and adjust further if needed

Alternatively, you can use a heat gun to evenly heat the heel bulb straps. This is a less safe method and we recommend the use of hot water instead. Be careful not to heat the straps too much as this will burn your Scootboots. Videos on heat stretching with a heat gun can be found here. 

The heel straps must be stretched no greater than 5mm (1/4”). This equates to a full boot size. Over-stretching your Scootboots will compromise the fit. Heat stretching will also void your warranty. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.

Your horse may have large heel bulbs with maximum digital cushion development making the heel bulb straps in your Scootboots extra tight.

 Heat stretching is an option when the smaller size is too snug on the heel bulbs, but the next size up is too loose.

To heat stretch your Scootboot Mud Straps you need to:

1. Place the Scootboot Mud Straps in very hot water for approximately 1 minute 
2. Take the straps out of the water and stretch both ends 
3. Hold the strap in this position until the strap cools
4. Once the strap is cold, you can use it on your horse

Alternatively, you can use a heat gun to evenly heat your Scootboot Mud Straps. This is a less safe method and we recommend the use of very hot water instead. Move the heat gun up and down the strap approximately 5-10 cm (3-4”) away from the strap on both sides.

If too small - if you cannot slip a finger comfortably around the periphery of the Scootboot Mud Strap, then the Scootboot Mud Strap is a size too small and will likely cause rubbing.

Scootboot Pads are only necessary if your horse has very sensitive soles or is in between sizes. 

The Scootboot is made from thermoplastic urethane which has good shock-absorbing qualities. If your horse has healthy and fully transitioned hooves, Scootboot Pads will most likely not be required.

You can size your Scootboot Skins the same way you size your Scootboot Classic Regulars!

Scootboot offers a Free Sizing Service to all customers. If you use Scootboot’s free sizing service and purchase from our online store, we will give you free shipping and free exchange if we size incorrectly!

To take your Sizing Pictures, you need to:

1.      Ensure your horse has had a correct barefoot trim within the last 2 weeks. A barefoot trim requires a rolled toe, bevelled hoof wall, low heel and no flare

2.     Take four pictures of each hoof you want sized up:

i)              First image: Measure from the centre of the toe and down over the frog

ii)            Second image: Measure across the widest part of the hoof

iii)           Third image: Take a clear photo directly in front of the hoof

iv)           Fourth image: Take a clear photo showing the side of the hoof 

3.     Send your sizing pictures to our Scootboot Sizing Team by:

i)              Uploading them through our Website

ii)            Emailing them to sizing@scootboots.com

iii)           Messaging them on our Facebook Page

iv)           Sending them to us via live chat on our Website.

We recommend that gluing be undertaken by people who are skilled and experienced in gluing hoof boots. 

To prepare Scootboot Skins for gluing:

1. Put on protective eye equipment and latex gloves 
2. Attach a wire brush to a cordless drill and rough up the inside of the Scootboot Skins until all factory polish has been removed 
3. Clean the inside of the Scootboot Skins with a rag and methylated spirits  
4. Cut a piece of cloth tape and stick it across the slots on both sides and the opening at the front on the outside of the Scootboot Skins 

To glue Scootboot Skins:

Use a heat gun or hairdryer to dry the hoof

1. Use the back of a rasp to rasp off any oil and dirt off the hoof wall 
2. Use a sanding block to sand off any remaining dirt or oil 
3. Clean off any loose particles from the hoof with a rag and methylated spirits 
4. When the methylated spirits has dried, the hoof is ready for gluing 
5. Place a piece of masking tape over the vents on the outside of the Scootboot Skins. This allows the glue to penetrate the area and form a plug
6. Check the fit of the prepared Scootboot Skins on the hoof. It should be snug at the front of the Scootboot Skins with the toe forward. On the side of the hoof, the Scootboot Skins should sit below the hairline. On the back of the hoof there should be no excessive overhang of the heel bulbs
7. Mark the centre of the hoof with a pencil so the Scootboot Skins will be straight and centred when you glue them on 
8. Fit your Adapter into the bottom of the Shufit Glue and put it in the glue applicator
9. Remove the lid of the glue and attach the Mixing Tip
10. Test your glue before putting it in the Scootboot Skins, it should turn a light grey colour
11. Generously apply the glue to each side, inside the Scootboot Skins
12. Place your horse’s hoof on a hoof stand 
13. Open the Scootboot Skins
14. Lift the hoof and place one side of the Scootboot Skins onto the hoof, and then place the other side onto it
15. Place the hoof back on the hoof stand and smooth out the glue 
16. Wrap the hoof in plastic wrap and hold the hoof above the ground for 2-3 minutes

We recommend Shufit Glue. 

Other adhesive glues may contain chemicals that could contaminate your Scootboots and void your warranty. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.

When gluing your Scootboot Skins onto your horse’s hooves, we strongly recommend keeping the bottom 15mm (5/8”) of your Scootboot Skins above the sole glue-free. 

The glue must not get under the sole of the hoof as any lumps of glue are likely to cause bruising.

No. The side vents of your Scootboot Skins provide an advantage when gluing.

Place a piece of masking tape over the vents on the outside of your Scootboot Skins. This allows the glue to penetrate the area and form a plug, which adds to the strength of the glue.

Absolutely! Scootboots are very easy to clean as they are a ‘one-piece’ moulding. There are no ties, cables or velcro. They can simply be hosed off at the end of a ride.

Do not use any chemicals such as copper sulphate, insect spray, or cleaning agents on your Scootboots. These may react with the material your Scootboots are made of and this will void your warranty. Go to our Warranty Page for more information.

As Scootboots are a one-piece moulding, they are super easy and simple to clean. 

To clean Scootboots:

1. Hose off any mud, grass or debris 
2. Leave them to dry 
3. Place the Scootboots back in their tote bag and store them indoors in a moderate temperature

To clean Scootboot Skins:

1. Pick up your horse’s hoof 
2. Carefully lift open the bottom of the toe with a hoof pick
3. Place the nozzle of a hose in the opening of the back of your Scootboot Skins
4. Ensure the water running into the back of the boot is filtering out the front of your Scootboot Skins and is flushing out any debris that may have entered
5. Remove the hoof pick

No. You can leave Scootboot Skins on for a 5-6 week trimming period without creating hoof health issues. 

Scootboot Skins allow the sole to breathe as the design allows air to circulate. This helps prevent a build-up of bacteria or fungus. The soles can also be flushed out and medication can be applied during the 5-6 week setting.

Scootboots are made of thermoplastic urethane which is sensitive to chemicals and extreme hot or cold temperatures. You must store your Scootboots in their tote bag and hang them indoors at a moderate temperature.

If Scootboots are stored in an air-tight container it can lead to hydrolysis where moisture can penetrate the TPU and break it down. This can also occur if Scootboots are unused for long periods of time.

Yes, you can! Every pair of Scootboots is sold with spare hardware consisting of rivets, screws and knob hooks.

The tools required for replacement of the hardware on Scootboots are:

• A Phillips Head screwdriver (long shaft)
• A regular screwdriver
• A pair of wire cutters
• Thread locking glue

To remove Hardware:

1. Remove the straps from the Scootboots
2. Cut the head of the rivet off the front of the Scootboots with a pair of wire cutters 
3. Fit the Scootboots with 6 knob hooks from the Scootboot Knob Hooks pack and secure them with a small amount of Loctite Glue 
4. Secure the straps back on the new hardware on the Scootboots

Please note that Loctite 222, our recommended thread locking glue, may make removal of the screws difficult.

No, you cannot use any hoof oils or greases with Scootboots. Oils and greases are not necessary and make the inside of your Scootboots slippery. 

A horse’s hoof wall is approximately 70% water. When conditions are dry, moisture evaporates from the hooves and they reduce in size and become dry and brittle. You need to replace the lost moisture with water, not grease or oils.
